Developmentally appropriate physical education experiences may be new to you, so let's look at what they are. Doug, what can you tell us about the developmental differences in students, from your teaching experiences?
From my experience, I would say developmentally appropriate physical education accommodates a variety of individual differences, such as previous movement experiences, developmental status, body size, age, level of fitness and skill, cognitive and affective experiences, and cultural identity. No two students are alike. Kindergartners are not the same as fourth graders, and seventh graders are not the same as ninth graders. It's also important to note that no two ninth graders are the same either, and there will be differences within a grade level. As a result, physical education experiences should reflect the physical, cognitive, and social development of students.
