Let's wrap up your orientation by focusing on the matter of optimizing chronic training programs through manipulation of both training quantity and intensity. United Insurance is a large company, and many of its employees are enrolled here at the Fitness Center. A considerable number of these employees are athletes who do their training here. It would not be unusual, during the course of your work at the Fitness Center, for you to be asked to develop resistance-training programs for these athletes.

As you know, to reach their best strength and performance levels, athletes need to train throughout the year. They need to be able to reach peak performance, but at the same time they need to avoid overtraining. The best way for an athlete to accomplish this is to manipulate the intensity and quantity of training so that he or she will reach peak performance at the right time of the year. This concept is known as periodization.
